ALINA KHOZNAN
Alina Khozhantayeva, a self-taught expressionist artist from Uralsk, Kazakhstan, captures the essence of humans and dogs through her evocative paintings. The painting "Mask" is an allegory painting. We live in a world where social pressure is at its peak. In order to fit into society and not become an outcast, many are forced to change their behavior, beliefs, interests, and desires to fit the conventional framework. Some take off this so-called “mask” in front of their loved ones, friends, partners, showing their true inner world, while for others the mask has become an integral part of their life and marked for them the loss of their individuality. This picture shows us that behind this very mask we will not be able to see its owner. The color palette of the painting was not chosen by chance: the predominantly cold background reflects how a person continuously wearing a mask sees the world around him, his emotional state, and the warm colors “emitted” by the wearer himself are the very source of happiness that he can achieve if he finds himself.
The allegory of the mask as a symbol of hidden emotions and internal conflicts allows the viewer to come into contact with the theme of identity, social pressure and loss of individuality.
