In Kazakh culture, each individual is part of a 'Ru,' or clan, which belongs to one of the three zhuzes: the Elder, Middle, or Younger. However, my grandmother was part of the Tore clan, descendants of Genghis Khan, a unique lineage that stands apart from the zhuzes, as it represented aristocrats and those of royal blood. The wolf, the sacred spirit animal of the Tore clan, embodies strength, loyalty, and wisdom.
My grandmother and I shared a profound bond, and her passing when I was just 9 years old left a lasting imprint on my heart. This portrait is a tribute to her memory, representing not only our connection but also the enduring presence of her spirit in my life. Through this work, I honor her legacy and the cultural heritage she passed down to me, keeping a piece of her forever with me.
